Navigating mental health during pregnancy and the postpartum period can be difficult. It can feel overwhelming and isolating during a time when parents feel pressure to feel their happiest. It is estimated that 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men will experience a perinatal anxiety or mood disorder.
For some new mothers, the first few days after childbirth can feel like an emotional rollercoaster, going from extreme happiness and fulfillment to experiencing depressive symptoms such as anxiety and crying spells. These are hormonal changes known as the “baby blues” and will affect 80% of new mothers. It peaks between 2-5 days after childbirth and often goes away on its own after two weeks. However, for some these symptoms do not go away and become a severe, yet treatable mental health diagnosis.
Perinatal anxiety and mood disorders include Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Postpartum Psychosis and Postpartum Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. These diagnoses can present in many ways; however, some symptoms include excessive worrying about safety of the baby or others, intrusive thoughts, feeling panicked or scared, sadness, crying spells, anger and irritability, difficulty bonding with the baby, insomnia, and thoughts of hurting oneself or the baby. Individual counseling can help you navigate this difficult time adding support, enhancing coping skills, and helping relieve symptoms.
